J. Timothy DiPiero

So, my family doctor sent me to a urologist who ordered a biopsy of the prostate. You're asleep for the biopsy, which causes some slight bleeding for a few days. Again, no big deal. The test results showed I had a few cancer cells, but the doctor thought we had caught it very early.

I did some research and talked to some doctors about my options, and to some patients who have had the prostatectomy and who have had what's called "radiation seeds." Both methods are considered effective, and physicians have different opinions on which is better. I opted for the prostatectomy by robotic surgery.

The preparation for surgery was similar to other preps, which I did on a Thursday night. I had the surgery Friday morning and was released on Saturday morning. The post-op pain was not severe; Tylenol was all that I required.

UK’s first double high-dose cancer treatment delivered in Bristol

Patients are normally suffering from locally-advanced prostate cancer and receive brachytherapy as a boost prior to receiving a full course of external beam radiotherapy.

Bristol Oncology Centre, which serves 2.4 million people in the Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire region, has been using a Varian GammaMed afterloader since 2005. The device is used in combination with BrachyVision treatment planning software, which enables clinicians to plan treatments by combining and using MRI, CT and 3D scans for the best possible images of the tumor and surrounding organs.

Pancreatic cancer difficult to detect, harder to treat

Complicating matters, people with pancreatic cancer usually have few, if any, symptoms until the disease is more advanced. In some cases, weight loss, abdominal or back discomfort, a slight yellowing of the eyes and skin and other complaints may alert doctors to the condition, but early warning symptoms are not common.

Molecule Linked With Advanced Prostate Cancer

Many men end up having prostate biopsies when there's no cancer present.

And because of an elevated PSA level, some men may be diagnosed with a prostate cancer that they would have never even known about otherwise and would never have caused any symptoms.

If results from the current study are validated by additional studies and a test is developed, many men could potentially avoid unnecessary treatment that often compromises quality-of-life.

"We could potentially monitor the metabolites in a prostate cancer sample to tell us which patients have the more aggressive disease that will progress on to metastasis," says Chinnaiyan. "We also believe that the findings may have therapeutic implications because one of the interesting findings in this particular study is that pathways that are involved in sarcosine metabolism appear to be involved in cancer invasiveness and prostate cancer aggressiveness in general."

"This could be a wonderful find, if it holds up," says Durado Brooks, MD, director of prostate and colorectal cancers at the American Cancer Society.

Oral Health Maintenance Important for Patients With Osteoporosis

According to the authors, the literature indicated that osteoporosis and related fractures are more common than coronary disease, stroke and breast cancer. Fractures resulting from osteoporosis can affect a patient's quality of life, as well as result in functional impairment and increased health care cost and mortality.

Their literature search also revealed that medical management of osteoporosis includes diet control, weight-bearing exercise, discontinuation of tobacco and alcohol intake, and use of medications -- including selective estrogen receptor modulators, calcitonin, anabolic agents and bisphosphonates _ that have been associated with the development of osteonecrosis of the jaw.

The authors determined that oral health maintenance is important in patients with osteoporosis, and that changes to bisphosphonate therapy or other medical treatment should be made only after consultation with the patient's physician.

Women's Multivitamin Study: Predictable Results And A Waste Of

The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) claims today that the latest study which claims to show that multivitamin supplements don't prevent cancer or heart disease, is a waste of public money. These funds, says the ANH, could be much more usefully spent on aspects of preventative medicine where a positive result was more likely. .

BB's Jade Goody to marry boyfriend after cancer news

She has not hidden her loss of hair from the cancer treatment and her suffering has struck a chord with the British public as she has two young sons, Bobby, five, and Freddie, four, from an earlier relationship. "I've decided I'm going to make them a memory box and put in lots of things that will remind them of me and what we did together," she said. "And maybe when they're older it will help them remember." Goody, then a dental nurse, found fame in Britain by appearing in the 2002 series of reality television show Big Brother. Locked in a house with other contestants, her chaotic appearance and her mangling of the English language won her a loyal following and she rapidly became a firm fixture in the gossip pages. Some of her utterings are etched in British TV history - at one point, she asked "Rio de Janeiro, ain't that a person?" She amassed a fortune, launching exercise DVDs and a perfume and fronting a number of TV shows of her own.

OncoGenex Provides Update on Two-Year Survival Data from Ongoing

51% of patients had adenocarcinoma, 16% had squamous cell carcinoma and 33% of patients had undifferentiated or unspecified non-small cell lung cancer. The primary objectives of the study were designed to estimate objective response rates of OGX-011 in combination with a gemcitabine/platinum-based regimen, establish the recommended dose of OGX-011, and determine the safety and tolerability. Secondary objectives were aimed to estimate the progression-free survival, overall survival, the pharmacokinetic profile of OGX-011, and the effect of OGX-011 on serum clusterin levels.

69% of patients experienced disease control (complete response =1%, partial response =30%, stable disease =38%), 26% experienced disease progression, and response was not assessable in 5%.
