Lung cancer surgery shifting to Oshawa
Patients needing lung cancer treatment will have to travel to Oshawa for major surgeries, but all other aspects of their care will remain in Peterborough, according to a plan released yesterday. The Central East Local Health Integration Network's clinical services plan lays out steps to create "one acute care network" for improved access to care. While yesterday's report points to Peterborough Regional Health Centre as being a "centre of excellence," in several areas, thoracic (lung) surgery is being moved to Lakeridge Health Corporation in Oshawa. "When I see those details worked out, and actually in place and delivering high quality care with equal access, then I'll be satisfied," said Dr. Peter McLaughlin, PRHC's chief of staff. PRHC will continue to do outpatient surgeries, consultations, pre and post-operative clinics and chemotherapy, as well as any other service it currently offers.

Dying man slams slow hospital response
Mr Kyngdon promptly organised a biopsy which confirmed Mr Jenkins had cancer of the prostate.
He referred him to a urologist in Hamilton but before this could befinalised, on October 30, Mr Jenkins snapped his upper arm whilelifting some gib board at work. He remembered looking at the X-ray witha doctor at Gisborne Hospital.
"I commented on how you could seeit had broken clean in half and the doctor said it was not the breakthat was the worry - it was this grey mouldy looking matter in themiddle of the bone."
His worst fears were confirmed when that doctor told him that the pulpy matter was secondary cancer.
Hewas told the condition was terminal. An oncology nurse told him itwould only be a matter of months. In fact, he got just over a year.
What Is Lung Cancer Anyway?
I realized that in order to understand the treatment options, I needed to know more about what lung cancer is. Most lung cancer starts in the lining of the bronchi, although it can also start in other areas of the lung. First, there are areas of precancerous changes in the lung. These eventually develop into tumors. The tumors produce signals that cause new blood vessels to grow that in turn feed the cancerous cells. Once this lung cancer occurs the cells can break away and spread to other parts of the body. The cancerous cells are actual lung cells that no longer behave in a normal way. They divide rapidly forming tumors that clog up the lung and make it stop functioning in a normal fashion. One of the reasons why it is hard to fight lung cancer is because the cancerous cells are actual lung cells, so the bodies immune system does not recognized them as foreign entities and try to destroy them.

1590 men with prostate biopsy confirmed high grade PIN were randomized to receive placebo or toremifene 20 milligrams and are receiving a prostate biopsy years one, two and three. The exact timing of the efficacy analysis is driven by the number of cancer events in the trial. In addition, we are working with several diagnostic companies to identify high grade PIN patients using a non invasive test. Moreover, we are exploring another important molecular marker called TMPRSS2: ERG, an estrogen regulated oncoprotein that has been shown to be associated with aggressive prostate cancer.
