UK’s first double high-dose cancer treatment delivered in Bristol

Patients are normally suffering from locally-advanced prostate cancer and receive brachytherapy as a boost prior to receiving a full course of external beam radiotherapy.

Bristol Oncology Centre, which serves 2.4 million people in the Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire region, has been using a Varian GammaMed afterloader since 2005. The device is used in combination with BrachyVision treatment planning software, which enables clinicians to plan treatments by combining and using MRI, CT and 3D scans for the best possible images of the tumor and surrounding organs.

The parents of a girl battling a rare form of cancer have told of their turmoil.

Devoted parents Deryck and Wanda remember only too well the painful memories of discovering a tumour growing in their daughter's chest when.

"We became concerned when Natasha turned very pale and lost a lot of weight," said Deryck.

Their worst fears were confirmed soon after tests and Natasha was admitted to Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Treatment was tough on Natasha, and when chemotherapy did not shrink the size of the tumour sufficiently, she had two ribs removed.

Dr. Victor Forys, Press Conference

We need to stop dividing patients into women, men, breast cancer patients, prostate cancer patients, asthma patients, hypertension patients, diabetes patients, and unite ALL PATIENTS to pass real health insurance coverage for people over age 49 that get any illness or cancer, even if they lose their job. That is the real issue" said Dr. Victor Forys.

"We are all patients," said Dr. Victor Forys.

"The biggest threat to the health of millions of Americans isn't cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure, it's the lack of health care coverage and we can cure that right now," Dr. Victor Forys "That's the biggest threat to the health of Americans - one in six, 47 million Americans lack insurance," said Dr. Forys.

At last we're talking about the Big C: Cancer specialist says we

Within 20 years cancer will be considered a chronic disease, joining conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma. The model of prostate cancer, where many die with it rather than from it, will be common.

When cancer does develop, refinements of current technologies and techniques – in imaging, radiotherapy and surgery – together with the availability of targeted drugs
will make it controllable. Cure will not be the only satisfactory outcome. Fear that cancer will definitely kill will be replaced by an acceptance that many forms of cancer are a consequence of age.

Well-informed patients, with adequate funds, will ensure that they have rapid access to the newest and the best, wherever it is in the world. More patients will benefit from better diagnosis and treatments, with greater emphasis on quality of life.

Many men would consider breast reduction

They can be the side-effect of legal drugs (such as those used in prostate cancer) and illegal drugs (steroids). Or the cause can be genetic.

In boys and younger men, enlarged breast tissue can result from a temporary hormonal imbalances triggered at puberty. Some experts have theorised that hormone-imitating substances found in plastics and elsewhere in our increasingly unnatural environment might be causing similar hormonal imbalances in older men leading to moobs.
