Plea for help as cancer services' demand soars

Dr Elsaleh said a new brachytherapy, or prostate treatment program, would begin in June or July and another program offering specialised brain cancer treatment was also on the cards.

Patients have to travel interstate to receive the two treatments at the moment. Dr Elsaleh said the department had been able to recruit more staff, from administrators to medical specialists, to help ease demand.

''Before I came here there were 3.6 radiation oncologists, now we have seven radiation oncologists. I suppose in some way increased demand is met with increased supply but we're still not quite there.''

The Cancer Council will mark World Cancer Day with a presentation by Professor Ray Lowenthal, Snake Oil, Coffee Enemas and Other Nostrums for Cancer a Recent History of Cancer Quackery in Australia, at Canberra Hospital Auditorium today.

At last we're talking about the Big C: Cancer specialist says we

Within 20 years cancer will be considered a chronic disease, joining conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma. The model of prostate cancer, where many die with it rather than from it, will be common.

When cancer does develop, refinements of current technologies and techniques – in imaging, radiotherapy and surgery – together with the availability of targeted drugs
will make it controllable. Cure will not be the only satisfactory outcome. Fear that cancer will definitely kill will be replaced by an acceptance that many forms of cancer are a consequence of age.

Well-informed patients, with adequate funds, will ensure that they have rapid access to the newest and the best, wherever it is in the world. More patients will benefit from better diagnosis and treatments, with greater emphasis on quality of life.

UK’s first double high-dose cancer treatment delivered in Bristol

Patients are normally suffering from locally-advanced prostate cancer and receive brachytherapy as a boost prior to receiving a full course of external beam radiotherapy.

Bristol Oncology Centre, which serves 2.4 million people in the Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire region, has been using a Varian GammaMed afterloader since 2005. The device is used in combination with BrachyVision treatment planning software, which enables clinicians to plan treatments by combining and using MRI, CT and 3D scans for the best possible images of the tumor and surrounding organs.

Slim: A Peaceful Man Who Has Made A Communal Impact

He had lost his former apartment when he entered the hospital for prostate cancer treatment."They don’t even care about the cops now and kids are getting hurt, that’s why I’m glad I’m here," Slim said comparing his old environment to his new home. "I got a lot of protection here. It’s nice here. They couldn’t move me with a bulldozer."Sr. Kovalik also noted the violence in Philadelphia and said more people like Slim would change the city’s emotional charge."If we had more Slims in the world we wouldn’t be worried about the violence we have today," Sr. Kovalik said. "He’s such a gentle person and if we had more gentle people in the world we’d have less violence."In contrast to his former living conditions, Slim is at peace in Holy Family Home.

I'm Mad . . . Smokin' Mad!

Isn't it bad enough that lung cancer, now the leading cause of cancer death among women, will kill tens of thousands of women this year? In addition, smoking increases the risk for other cancers, including cervix, mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach and some forms of leukemia. And, smoking raises your risk of heart disease and stroke.

If you smoke, find a way to quit - - now. Please. Whatever it takes, you must stop. I've read several blogs about these new cigarette campaigns and many users argue the point that it's their lives and non-smokers should butt out. But it is our business for a ton of reasons. I lost people I loved to lung cancer and the pain, the loss, the grief, the missed years, the caregiving and the cost are all our business.

It's ironic that pink or teal are rallying colors for women's cancers while simultaneously enticing thousands of young women to proudly display a hip new accessory that carries over 60 poisons into their lungs, and then back out into our air.

Tweeters as editors, sources, merchants?

Politics winner @justin_hart promoted a politician while Scott Zagarino @athletes4acure spoke out about prostate cancer when accepting the nonprofits prize. Martin Sargent @martinsargent, won the weird category and took a dig at the platform itself. "What's truly weird is that by receiving the $1,000 grant that accompanies this award, I'm 1,000 times more profitable than Twitter. Thank you." Another contendor for the weird prize, @Matman showed up at the party in an outfit to promote WellComeMat.com

Then there was the mix of attendees, many of whom paid a $60 entrance fee, besides the reporters who gave the event pretty wide coverage. Nora Abousteit, who runs an open source sewing pattern web site burdaStyle.com, said she depends so much on Twitter for media updates that she changed her cellphone number and service after discovering twitter didn't work well on her old phone.

UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE CELEBRATES BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

Throughout her life, Mary Lasker fought to encourage funding for medical research for cancer, heart disease, stroke, mental illness, blindness, cerebral palsy, arthritis, osteoporosis, growth disorders, and AIDS. She served on numerous public health advisory boards. Especially passionate about the fight against cancer, she led the reorganization and growth of the American Cancer Society and established its research program; advocated more aggressive applied cancer research, including chemotherapy; and became the driving force behind the National Cancer Act, which launched the national “war on cancer" in 1971. As a result of her work, she became one of the most influential laypersons in medical research in the 20th century.
In 1969, Mary Lasker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, and she received a Congressional Gold Medal in 1989.

Prostate Biopsy Samples Show Evidence of Differential Gene

Earlier observational studies had reported that selenium, vitamin E, or both, might reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

To determine whether gene expression patterns change in patients after supplement use, Jeri Kim, M.D., of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and colleagues enrolled 39 patients in a phase IIA trial and randomly assigned them to receive selenium, vitamin E, both supplements, or placebo for three to six weeks before prostatectomy. Researchers then isolated and studied tumor cells, stromal cells, and normal cells from biopsy samples removed from the prostatectomy specimens.

The investigators found that gene expression patterns differed between the treatment groups. Expression of several molecular pathways associated with cancer were altered in the supplement groups compared with the placebo group.
